Make your Wi-Fi faster and safer

Tech3 minute readUpdated October 2026

Slow Wi-Fi is often a setup issue, not a problem with your plan.

Boost speed

  • Place the router in a central, high, open spot, away from thick walls, metal and the microwave.
  • Restart the router now and then.
  • Use the 5 GHz network for speed when you are close, and 2.4 GHz for range.
  • Disconnect devices you are not using.

Keep it secure

  • Change the default router admin password.
  • Use WPA3 if available, or WPA2, with a long Wi-Fi password.
  • Install router updates when available.
  • Set up a guest network for visitors.

Still not working?

Run a speed test next to the router. If the speed is much lower than your plan, contact your provider. If the speed is fine near the router but poor in other rooms, consider a mesh system or an extender.
